I was just watching Tina Brown on The Colbert Report. You remember her; she was the editor of Vanity Fair or The New Yorker or some such paper blog. Now she’s all excited because she’s launched a new website called The Daily Beast.

I guess her name is all it takes to get the money for a project like this.

It’s been ten years since I first heard someone ramble on about how some new website was going to be like “a cocktail party full of smart people,” where you could get the latest tidbits of interesting news without having to, like, you know, read. I think the only company that actually managed to make it work was Salon.com. The rest all fell victim to apathy, scandal, and the quest for ever-more-salacious gossip to keep the audience coming back.

Next I expect her to talk about how many hits she’s getting. (And probably gussying up the numbers to keep her 20th century investors happy.)

Wake up and smell the millennium, Tina!
